Sue Ward Named UAMS Cancer Institute Volunteer of the Year
| With more than 2,000 volunteer hours behind her and countless more ahead, Sue Ward’s giving spirit shows no sign of slowing down.
That’s why it came as no surprise to her fellow volunteers when Ward was named 2018 Volunteer of the Year by the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute Auxiliary. The award was presented at the auxiliary’s Oct. 25 volunteer appreciation luncheon hosted by Stuart Cobb.
Since 2007, Ward has donated her time to the Cancer Institute serving as a comfort care volunteer in the waiting rooms, providing a listening ear for patients and caregivers when they need it most.
“Sue is a kind person who has wonderful insight and seems to know just how to approach each patient and caregiver,” said Janie Lowe, director of volunteer services and auxiliary at the Cancer Institute.
Lowe added that one caregiver recently praised Ward for her “wise approach” in providing comfort during a difficult situation.
“That’s just who Sue is. She is always thinking of others and ways she can make their day better,” Lowe said.
In addition to assisting patients and caregivers, Ward also serves snacks and ensures the waiting room coffee pots are full and in tip-top condition.
“We are so fortunate that Sue chooses to volunteer at the Cancer Institute,” Lowe said.
The Cancer Institute Auxiliary has about 500 members, more than half of whom volunteer on a regular basis in the waiting areas and gift shop or help with special events throughout the year.
Funds raised by the auxiliary are distributed as grants benefiting cancer patients at the Cancer Institute.
