Glaucoma Specialist Carina Torres Sanvicente, M.D., Joins UAMS Jones Eye Institute
| Carina Torres Sanvicente, M.D., has joined the Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) as a glaucoma specialist.
“We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Sanvicente join us to contribute fellowship-trained expertise in treating our glaucoma patients,” said Paul Phillips, M.D., director of the Jones Eye Institute and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology. “Glaucoma is a disease that can affect anyone, and being able to properly treat it with the latest medical advances is an essential part of our mission at JEI.”
Sanvicente will also serve as an assistant professor in the UAMS College of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology.
“I am excited to be part of the Jones Eye Institute at UAMS, not only working to help patients daily, but also researching, educating students and training residents so that our understanding of and ability to treat glaucoma will only grow,” said Sanvicente.
A native of Brazil, Sanvicente completed her pre-clinical medical courses at Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sol and earned her medical degree in 2012 from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sol in Porto Alegre, Brazil. She completed her ophthalmology residency at the Hospital Banco de Olhos in 2017. She completed a glaucoma research fellowship in 2018 at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and a glaucoma clinical fellowship in 2020 at Emory University in Atlanta.
During her glaucoma research fellowship, she was the inaugural recipient of the Ann and George Spaeth Scholar Award, and during her residency she served as chief resident.
She is the author of 15 published, peer-reviewed research articles and three book chapters or other publications.
Sanvicente is fluent in both English and Portuguese and speaks advanced Spanish.
