Ruth Allen, Ph.D., is a former associate dean for academic affairs in the UAMS College of Health Professions. She retired in 2002. Born in Saginaw, Michigan, Allen attended the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and the University of Oregon. Along the way, she has traveled the world. Having served in the Peace Corps (Malaysia), Allen took her first trip around the world “on the way home from Malaysia.” Her ultimate destination was Michigan State University where she completed her doctoral work.

Managing to escape the snow, Allen traveled south to launch her career in Houston, Texas. Her work led her to tenures in Wichita, Kansas and Galveston, Texas. Ultimately, Allen built her home and a greenhouse in Little Rock. An avid gardener and adventurer, Allen grows orchids, having collected in the jungles of French Guyana. In recognition of the students, staff and faculty of UAMS, Allen has endowed two annual concerts on the campus of UAMS.

“It is my hope that these concerts will promote the beautiful music of the ASO, while providing the opportunity for celebration and renewal to the many hardworking UAMS students, staff and faculty,” Ruth Allen said.
