Dr. Michael Edwards, chairman of the Department of Surgery, commented, “Dr. Mabry is and has been a local, regional, and national physician leader of distinction. His historical and ongoing contributions to the world of surgery clearly justify this important appointment and position. Not only is he appreciated nationally, but his contributions to the state of Arkansas and his home department of surgery here in Little Rock are an example to all.”

Mabry also is in practice at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, Ark., as a general, vascular, and thoracic surgeon. He is a graduate (1975) and former surgical resident of the UAMS College of Medicine.

A seat on the Board of Regents is a prestigious post. Mabry is the first surgeon from Arkansas to be elected to the Board of Regents. The 19-member Board of Regents formulates policy and directs the affairs of the organization of surgeons. Mabry will serve a three-year term.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational organization founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical practice while improving the care of the surgical patient. It has more than 64,000 members, known as fellows, including 470 in Arkansas. To become a fellow, a surgeon must complete an approved residency in a surgical specialty, become certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties, and pass a rigorous review of their practice of surgery by the American College of Surgeons.

Mabry has been president of the Arkansas chapter of the organization, and has served on several of the group’s national committees, including the Committee on Young Surgeons. He is the editorial advisor for the ACS Bulletin and serves on the ACS General Surgery Coding and Reimbursement Committee, the Advisory Council for General Surgery, and as ACS Advisor to the American Medical Association Relative Value Update Committee. At the state level, Mabry serves on the Board of Directors of the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care, and the Governor’s Emergency Medical Services Training Committee. Mabry is a general surgeon who has been in practice at Jefferson Regional Medical Center since 1982. He is chairman of the boards of Jefferson Surgery Center, Arkansas Preferred Provider Organization, and Jefferson County Emergency Medical Services and is the medical director for the Paramedic Program at Southeast Arkansas College.

The American College of Surgeons is dedicated to the ethical and competent practice of surgery. Its achievements have significantly influenced the course of scientific surgery in America and have established it as an important advocate for all surgical patients.

Dr. Margo Longo, a retired general surgeon from Louisiana, has recently served on the ACS Board of Regents and now lives in Hot Springs, Ark.
