UAMS Sponsors Free Glaucoma Seminar Jan. 17
| LITTLE ROCK – The Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) will sponsor a free glaucoma seminar Friday, Jan. 17, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The seminar, “What Everyone With Glaucoma Ought to Know,” will be held in the William Poston Bowen Auditorium in the Jones Eye Institute on the UAMS campus in Little Rock. Seating is limited, and registration is required by Wednesday, Jan. 15. To register, call (501) 526-6000, ext. 1225, or e-mail sldean@uams.edu.
At the seminar, Dr. Tony Realini – the director of glaucoma services at the Jones Eye Institute – will describe glaucoma. He will also speak to the audience about new theories on the causes of glaucoma, new tests to track the damage that the disorder produces and various treatments for glaucoma.
Glaucoma is a disorder in which the pressure in the eyeball increases – damaging the optic nerve and causing the loss of peripheral vision. The disorder usually affects people over 40 years of age, and the loss of sight occurs slowly, painlessly and permanently before the glaucoma is discovered.
Realini is also an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology in the UAMS College of Medicine. He completed advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma at the University of Louisville in Kentucky and has extensive experience in his specialized area of medicine.
