UAMS Area Health Education Center Appoints New Family Practice Residency Director for South Arkansas
| EL DORADO , ARK. – The new director of family practice residency education in south Arkansas for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and the family practice residency program at UAMS.
Marilyn Marshall, M.D., will direct the Family Practice Residency Program at the UAMS Area Health Education Center – South Arkansas (AHEC-South). The AHEC is based in El Dorado and serves seven counties in southern Arkansas . Marshall was chief resident in the program in 1998-99.
The AHEC-South residency program provides three years of intensive training in family medicine for about 15 medical school graduates at a time. Residents gain experience at both the Medical Center of South Arkansas, a regional referral center, and in a private group practice with a base of rural patients. Mel Fratzke, P.E.D., is director of the AHEC-South.
Marshall is board-certified in family practice medicine and is licensed in advanced life support in obstetrics, cardiac advanced life support, and pediatric advanced life support. A native of Tallulah, Louisiana, she was previously medical director and primary care physician at Iberia Comprehensive Community Health Center in New Iberia, Louisiana. She succeeds Mark Dixon, M.D., who was residency director at the AHEC for 14 years.
