Of Arkansas’ “Best Doctors,” More than Half Are on UAMS Faculty

By todd

UAMS has 116 faculty members, or 52 percent, on the list of 221 “Best Doctors” from Arkansas. The UAMS physicians on the “Best Doctors” list are specialists in many areas, from pediatrics to geriatrics, and from neurosurgery to orthopaedic surgery. Some have joint appointments at one of the two UAMS affiliates, Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS). ACH and CAVHS are major clinical, research and teaching affiliates of UAMS. UAMS College of Medicine faculty physicians and surgeons provide the majority of medical care at both.

The “Best Doctors” list comes from Best Doctors Inc., a health care information service that polls about 30,000 doctors who have been identified in previous surveys as “the best” in their specialties and asks them: “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, and you could not treat them yourself, to whom would you refer them?” All voting is strictly confidential, so voters are not subject to the institutional, professional, or community pressures that often influence individual referrals. Physicians are not asked for and do not ever pay any fees for inclusion as a “Best Doctor.” Physicians are not notified of their inclusion until after the survey process is completed.
