Bruce R. Smoller, M.D., Is New Pathology Chair at UAMS College of Medicine
| LITTLE ROCK – Bruce R. Smoller, M.D., a national leader in the study of skin diseases, is the new chairman of the Department of Pathology in the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).
Smoller came to UAMS in 1997 as professor and chief of the Division of Dermatopathology in the Department of Pathology and professor in the Department of Dermatology. He previously held the same positions at Stanford University Medical School. He received his medical training at the University of Cincinnati and earned an undergraduate degree in psychology at Dartmouth College. He is president of the American Society of Dermatopathology.
Dean E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., of the UAMS College of Medicine, announced the appointment, commenting, “Dr. Smoller brings a wealth of academic and clinical scholarship to his new post.” In addition to receiving many honors for his teaching, Smoller has had three books, more than 200 scholarly articles and 30 book chapters published and edited two other books.
Smoller succeeds Aubrey Hough, M.D., who chaired the department for 21 years before becoming associate dean of the college. Smoller is married to the historian Laura Ackerman Smoller, Ph.D., of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, whose father, George Ackerman, M.D., is professor emeritus in the UAMS College of Medicine.
