Vice Chancellor Charles Cranford, D.D.S., M.P.H., commented, “Dr. Heard received the award for her service on the UAMS Graduate Medical Education Committee with oversight of family medicine residency programs at the UAMS AHECs. She was chosen to recognize her exemplary leadership and outstanding achievement of AHEC Program goals. Dr. Heard is widely viewed as one of the best physicians in the state, an innovative educator and scholar, and a leader at the local, state, and national levels in graduate medical education.”

UAMS Regional Programs presents the Bumpers Award annually. The award reflects the role of former governor and United States senator Dale Bumpers in establishing the network of UAMS Area Health Education Centers (AHECs), which are regarded as among the best in the nation.
