LITTLE ROCK – The Department of Ophthalmology in the Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute (JEI) at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) recently received $110,000 from Research to Prevent Blindness, the world’s leading voluntary organization supporting vision research, for continued research into the causes, treatment and prevention of blinding diseases.

The research will be directed by John P. Shock, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and in the UAMS College of Medicine and director of the JEI. To date, RPB has awarded grants totaling $1,412,500 to UAMS.

“The continued support from Research to Prevent Blindness provides another boost for our research into the causes and prevention of vision loss,” Shock said. “Finding new treatments and cures for blindness is a high priority for both the JEI and RPB.”

Much of the research will be performed in the Pat & Willard Walker Eye Research Center within the JEI. The JEI at UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic eye center that trains both future ophthalmologists and ophthalmic technicians as well as performs basic research and provides patient care.

UAMS centers of excellence are the Arkansas Cancer Research Center, Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute, Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy and Jackson T. Stephens Spine and Neurosciences Institute.
