By todd

LITTLE ROCK – Suzanne Hansen of Conway has been named program director of the ophthalmic medical technology program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

The ophthalmic medical technology program is the state’s only such program and is a joint effort between the UAMS College of Health Related Professions and the Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute at UAMS. Ophthalmic medical technologists are advanced-level technicians that perform clinical and diagnostic assessments of patients under the direction of an ophthalmologist.

Hansen has served as an instructor and interim program director for the ophthalmic medical technology program since August 2004. Prior to that, she served as clinical coordinator for the program.

She was an honor graduate of the UAMS program in 2003 after receiving a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Hendrix College in Conway in 2000.

UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic health center, with five colleges, a graduate school, a medical center, five centers of excellence and a statewide network of regional centers. UAMS has more than 2,200 students and 660 residents and is the state’s largest public employer with almost 9,000 employees. UAMS and its affiliates have an economic impact in Arkansas of $4.3 billion a year.

UAMS centers of excellence are the Arkansas Cancer Research Center, Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute, Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy and Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute.
