UAMS Head Start Registration to Begin Jan. 23

LITTLE ROCK — The Head Start and Early Head Start programs of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) are accepting applications starting Jan. 23 for the 2006-2007 school year.  


 


Early Head Start accepts applications from pregnant women and enrolls children age 6 weeks through 2 years. Head Start enrolls children ages 3-4. The child must turn 3 on or before Sept. 15.


 


Applications are available at the 27 Head Start or Early Head Start locations in Pulaski County and at the central office, 7415 Colonel Glenn Road. Central office hours are 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For information, call Cugini Madison and Eva Williams at (501) 570-5000.


 


To register a child, parents must provide:



  • a birth certificate
  • a copy of the child’s up-to-date immunization record
  • a copy of medical insurance, Medicaid or AR Kids First cards
  • a copy of the child’s Social Security card
  • proof of income

All services are free for those who qualify. Head Start accepts children without regard to race, sex, creed, color, religion, national origin or disabling condition. Ten percent of the program’s slots are reserved for children with special needs.


 


UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic health center, with five colleges, a graduate school, a medical center, five centers of excellence and a statewide network of regional centers. UAMS has about 2,320 students and 690 medical residents. It is one of the state’s largest public employers with almost 9,000 employees, including nearly 1,000 physicians who provide medical care to patients at UAMS, Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the VA Medical Center.
