UAMS’ Laurie Barber Honored by American Academy of Ophthalmology

LITTLE ROCK – Laurie Barber, M.D., an ophthalmologist in the Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), recently received the Secretariat Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. 


 


Recipients of the Secretariat Award are recognized for their contributions to educational programs and for their leadership in the organization. The award was presented at the academy’s 2006 Joint Meeting held in November at Las Vegas.


 


Barber, a professor of ophthalmology in the UAMS College of Medicine, is a comprehensive ophthalmologist, seeing patients at the JEI and in the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. She joined the UAMS faculty in 1990.


 


She has fellowship status in the American Academy of Ophthalmology and has served as president, as well as director of programs and continuing medical education, for the Arkansas Academy of Ophthalmology.  She is chair of OPHTHPAC, one of the largest medical political action committees in the nation.


 


The American Academy of Ophthalmology is the world’s largest association of eye physician and surgeons, with more than 27,000 members worldwide.


 


UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic health center, with five colleges, a graduate school, a medical center, six centers of excellence and a statewide network of regional centers. UAMS has about 2,430 students and 715 medical residents.
