Lawrence Cornett, Ph.D., Named UAMS Vice Chancellor for Research

LITTLE ROCK – Lawrence Cornett, Ph.D., has been named vice chancellor for research at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). He previously served as director of the Arkansas Biosciences Institute.


 


Cornett also holds the title of executive associate dean of the UAMS College of Medicine. He joined UAMS in 1980 as assistant professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. He was promoted to associate professor in 1985 and to professor in 1990. He continues to serve as professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics and the Department of Medicine.


 


Prior to coming to UAMS, Cornett earned his doctoral degree in physiology from the University of California, Davis, and continued his postdoctoral studies at the University of California, San Francisco. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Cardiovascular Research Institute and Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Services, at the University of California, San Francisco.


 


UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic health center, with five colleges, a graduate school, a medical center, six centers of excellence and a statewide network of regional centers. UAMS has about 2,430 students and 715 medical residents. It is one of the state’s largest public employers with about 9,400 employees, including nearly 1,000 physicians who provide medical care to patients at UAMS, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, the VA Medical Center and UAMS’ Area Health Education Centers throughout the state.
