LITTLE ROCK – An assistant professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has been awarded a two-year grant totaling $40,000 to assist in training medical and surgical residents in the area of geriatrics.

S. Ashfaq Hasan, M.D., assistant professor in the UAMS Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, received the grant through the Geriatrics for Specialists Initiative: Geriatrics Education for Specialty Residents Program, a project of The American Geriatrics Society and the John A. Hartford Foundation.

Hasan also is director of the UAMS Department of Orthopaedics Shoulder and Elbow Section.

The initiative is a component of the Hartford Foundation-funded project that aims to increase geriatrics expertise in surgical and related medical specialties.

UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic health center, with five colleges, a graduate school, a medical center, six centers of excellence and a statewide network of regional centers.
