LITTLE ROCK – Glen Mays, Ph.D., has been named chair of the Department of Health Policy & Management at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health.

Mays joined the College of Public Health faculty three years ago. He has served as the vice chair for research and led the Department of Health Policy & Management as chair pro tempore for 18 months. His appointment as permanent chair became effective July 1, said College of Public Health Dean Jim Raczynski, Ph.D.

Mays has received accolades from students for his teaching, established a productive research program and has been recognized nationally for his work, Raczynski said.

Mays served as chair pro tempore after the chair, Paul Halverson, Ph.D., was named director of the Division of Health in the former state Department of Health and Human Services. Halverson will remain on the college’s faculty but devote more time to the health department, which is transitioning to a stand-alone department.

UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic health center, with five colleges, a graduate school, a medical center, six centers of excellence and a statewide network of regional centers. UAMS has about 2,538 students and 733 medical residents. It is one of the state’s largest public employers with about 9,600 employees, including nearly 1,000 physicians who provide medical care to patients at UAMS, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, the VA Medical Center and UAMS’ Area Health Education Centers throughout the state. UAMS and its affiliates have an economic impact in Arkansas of $5 billion a year. For more information, visit www.uams.edu.
