LITTLE ROCK – The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has been recognized by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) for being in the top ten nationally in producing family medicine physicians.

The AAFP presented UAMS with an Achievement Award on May 2 at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Annual Spring Conference in Baltimore, Md.

“We are honored to be recognized as a national leader in training quality family medicine physicians,” said Debra Fiser, M.D., dean of the UAMS College of Medicine.  “This award is a tribute to the College’s Department of Family and Preventive Medicine and to our excellent Area Health Education Centers.”

Based on a three-year average for a period ending October 2007, 16.5 percent of UAMS graduates have entered Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited family medicine residency programs.

“This contribution is important to the specialty and, more importantly, to the health of all Americans,” said Perry A. Pugno, M.D., director of the Division of Medical Education for the AAFP.

UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic health center, with five colleges, a graduate school, a medical center, six centers of excellence and a statewide network of regional centers. UAMS has 2,538 students and 733 medical residents. Its centers of excellence include the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, the Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute, the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy, the Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute, the Psychiatric Research Institute and the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging. It is one of the state’s largest public employers with about 9,600 employees, including nearly 1,150 physicians who provide medical care to patients at UAMS, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, the VA Medical Center and UAMS’ Area Health Education Centers throughout the state. UAMS and its affiliates have an economic impact in Arkansas of $5 billion a year. Visit
