UAMS Benefit Luncheon to Support Geriatric Nurse Training
| LITTLE ROCK – The public is invited to a benefit luncheon for a University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) nursing program specializing in care for the elderly. The luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. April 16 at the Pleasant Valley Country Club.
Tickets are $40 per person. For reservations, call Stephanie Bennett at (501) 686-7987 or e-mail her at srbennett@uams.edu.
Proceeds from the luncheon will provide eight-week geriatric nursing externships that allow senior nursing students to learn about all aspects of care for the elderly. The externships are awarded by the Arkansas Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence at UAMS.
The sixth annual luncheon will honor Jane Krutz, entertainer and longtime face of the Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN), with a scholarship for the externship in her name and support a scholarship fund established by AETN.
“Jane Krutz has been a great supporter and champion for our Hartford Center for a long time and we want to honor her with this scholarship,” said Claudia Beverly, Ph.D., director of the Hartford Center.
Craig O’Neill will emcee the event and special toasters will include former Sen. David Pryor, AETN’s Allen Weatherly, Audrey Burtrum-Stanley and recently retired Arkansas Travelers General Manager Bill Valentine.
These competitive geriatric nursing externships allow students to train with nursing leaders, researchers and educators as they work at the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging Senior Health Center, the UAMS College of Nursing, selected nursing homes and outpatient facilities.
UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic health center, with five colleges, a graduate school, a new 540,000-square-foot hospital, six centers of excellence and a statewide network of regional centers. UAMS has 2,652 students and 733 medical residents. Its centers of excellence include the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, the Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute, the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy, the Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute, the Psychiatric Research Institute and the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging. It is the state’s largest public employer with more than 10,000 employees, including nearly 1,150 physicians who provide medical care to patients at UAMS, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, the VA Medical Center and UAMS’ Area Health Education Centers throughout the state.
