UAMS Graduates 870 New Health Care Professionals
LITTLE ROCK – The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) awarded certificates and degrees today to 870 graduates of its five colleges and graduate school during its commencement ceremony at Barton Coliseum.
| Diplomas were presented to 149 in the College of Medicine; 225 in the College of Nursing; 106 in the College of Pharmacy; 35 in the Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health; and 70 in the Graduate School. The highest graduate total was 285 from the 18 academic programs that make up the College of Health Related Professions.
The number of graduates increased more than 7 percent from the 809 graduates in 2009.
During the ceremony UAMS Chancellor Dan Rahn, M.D., presented the Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Service to J. Thomas May, E. Lee Ronnel and Judith G. Snowden.
The three were recognized for their long support of UAMS and its academic, patient care and research programs.
May, chairman and chief executive officer of Simmons First National Corp. in Pine Bluff and Simmons First National Bank, has long supported UAMS programs including the J. Thomas May Chair in Oncology and the Kathryn and J. Thomas May Professorship in ALS/Neurology. The J. Thomas May Center for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Research was dedicated and named for May in December 2008. He and his wife, Kathryn, are members of the Society of the Double Helix recognizing their philanthropic support of UAMS.
Ronnel, along with his wife, Dale, have been active supporters of UAMS for more than 25 years, including Lee’s service on the UAMS Foundation Fund Board where he is now chairman and Dale Ronnel’s service as immediate past chair of the UAMS Reynolds Institute on Aging Community Advisory Board. The Ronnels are lifetime members of the UAMS Chancellor’s Circle and Society of the Double Helix. Ronnel is president of Metal Recycling Corporation, which he began in 1979.
Snowden and her husband, David, are members of the Chancellor’s Circle and Society of the Double Helix. She began her support of UAMS in 1987 helping organize the Institute on Aging’s first advisory board. She later conceived the monthly “Beautiful Minds” education program of the UAMS Psychiatric Research Institute and continued to travel the state speaking in support of UAMS. She chaired the UAMS Hospital Expansion Initiative and Hospital Task Force Committee as well as serving on the steering committee for the UAMS Campaign Imagine comprehensive fundraising effort.
Degrees and certificates conferred during commencement include the doctor of philosophy, doctor of medicine, doctor of pharmacy, master of science, master of nursing science, bachelor of science in nursing, master of public health, doctor of public health, certificate in clinical and translational science, master of health services administration, post baccalaureate certificate in public health and a variety of degrees in the allied health disciplines including certificates, associate and Bachelor of Science degrees, post-baccalaureate certificates, the master of imaging sciences and doctor of audiology.
