UAMS Contest to Promote Healing Power of Art

By Ben Boulden

The contest is being held to celebrate National Mental Health Month in May. All art students and professional artists are invited to take part in the contest, with selected submissions to be deemed donated to the institute’s permanent art collection.

The institute recently opened a woman’s inpatient unit, and several of the pieces chosen in the contest will be permanently installed there. Prizes of $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second and $500 for third will be awarded.

Paintings, drawings and photographs are eligible, but all entries must be suitable for use in a medical facility. Submissions must be 22-by-30 inches or larger. An 8-by-10-inch PDF or low-resolution photograph of the artwork should be submitted, along with the title, media and dimensions of the work. The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. on April 26. Entries should be submitted to Meredith Fraiser, mgfraiser@uams.edu.

A reception will be held at UAMS on May 15 to publicly recognize the chosen submissions and award the winners.
