UAMS Receives Komen Grant for Mobile Mammography Unit

More than 6,200 women have received mammograms aboard the MammoVan since it first started traveling Arkansas in 2010.
April 10, 2013 | Women in 26 Arkansas counties have to travel miles from their home just to receive their annual mammogram. But the UAMS MammoVan is changing that.
Since it first hit the road in 2010, the UAMS MammoVan mobile mammography unit has provided mammograms to more than 6,200 women in counties that lack FDA-approved mammography facilities.
Now, thanks to a $73,442 grant from the Arkansas Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, even more women will have access to this potentially life-saving screening.
“We are honored to receive this continued funding from
Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Their support will make it possible for hundreds of Arkansas women in underserved communities to receive the preventive screenings they need and deserve,” Kim Enoch, UAMS MammoVan program manager, said.
The grant was one of 20 awarded to organizations across Arkansas at a ceremony March 29. Funding for the grants is predominantly raised through Komen’s annual Race for the Cure.
Since 2011, the UAMS MammoVan has received about $242,000 in grant funding from Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The MammoVan is a three-room, handicap-accessible unit outfitted with the most advanced digital mammography equipment and staffed by a certified mammography technologist and technical assistant.
Women receiving mammograms on the MammoVan receive their test results within one to two weeks. Results also are sent to each patient’s primary care physician. If the mammogram shows a potential abnormality, the patient is referred for follow-up to the appropriate services.
