UAMS Cancer Institute, Razorbacks Team Up on #StachesForSlive

Nov. 20, 2014 | There’s a lot of five o’clock shadow at the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute these days. And it’s not just from the long hours doctors keep.

Several Cancer Institute physicians have joined coaches and staff at the University of Arkansas (UA) Department of Athletics to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer by putting away their razors for a month-long campaign called #StachesForSlive.

The campaign ties into the national No Shave November movement during which men grow beards or mustaches in November to promote awareness of men’s health issues. View our doctors’ weekly progress here.

The #StachesForSlive campaign honors retiring SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, who recently experienced a recurrence of prostate cancer. Donations are requested in Slive’s honor to the Cancer Institute’s prostate cancer research program and can be made at cancer.uams.edu/movember.

The first 100 people to make a gift of $100 or more will receive an invitation to a mixer with the coaches and staff of Razorback Athletics and members of the UAMS Cancer Institute faculty prior to the Nov. 30 men’s basketball game vs. Iona at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville. The invitation will include two tickets to the game.

Each participant’s photo is posted on StachesforSlive.com and will be updated weekly. Anyone can get into the action by posting photos on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram with the #StachesForSlive hashtag. Women can join the fun by being creative, coming up with their own version of a mustache and snapping a shot. After the updated headshots are posted Nov. 24, visitors will have a chance to vote for the best and worst mustaches and beards.
