UAMS Graduates 931 New Health Care Professionals

May 18, 2015 | May 18, 2015 — The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) awarded certificates and degrees to 931 graduates of its five colleges and graduate school during its May 16 commencement ceremony at Verizon Arena in North Little Rock.

Diplomas were presented to 157 in the College of Medicine; 260 in the College of Nursing; 111 in the College of Pharmacy; 58 in the Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health; 91 in the Graduate School and 254 in the academic programs that make up the College of Health Professions.

During the ceremony, UAMS Chancellor Dan Rahn, M.D., presented the Chancellor’s Award to M. Joycelyn Elders, M.D. Elders was the 15th U.S. Surgeon General (1993-1994) and the first African-American, the second woman and the only native Arkansan to hold that honored position.

Elders graduated from the University of Arkansas, School of Medicine (now UAMS College of Medicine), and today serves as UAMS Distinguished Professor of Health Policy and Management and UAMS Professor Emeritus of Pediatric Endocrinology.

She served as director of the Arkansas Department of Health from 1987-1993, and during her tenure she nearly doubled childhood immunization rates, expanded the state’s prenatal care program, and increased home-care options for the chronically and terminally ill.

Today, she continues to urge citizens and governmental leaders to do more to advocate for adult, adolescent and child health promotion.

Rahn also presented the UAMS Chancellor’s Annual Teaching Awards, which recognize excellence among the faculty.

Eddie Dunn, Pharm.D., was presented with the Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Dunn is an associate professor in the College of Pharmacy who joined UAMS in 1992. He has served as the chapter advisor for the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists for 11 years. During that time, the chapter has been named national chapter of the year four times. Dunn’s work includes coordinating more than 500 patient care events across the state, supervising more than 1,200 students providing about 125,000 clinical services to Arkansans.

Wendy L. Ward, Ph.D., was presented with the Chancellor’s Award for Society and Health Education Excellence. Ward, who joined UAMS in 2003, is a professor in the College of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics. Her work brings patients, parents, faculty, students and residents together in research and clinical care for pediatric obesity. For the past 10 years she has directed the fellowship program that trains pediatric psychologists in interprofessional team care.

During commencement, degrees and certificates conferred include the doctor of philosophy, doctor of medicine, doctor of pharmacy, master of science, master of nursing science, bachelor of science in nursing, master of public health, doctor of public health, certificate in clinical and translational science, master of health services administration, post baccalaureate certificate in public health and a variety of degrees in allied health disciplines including certificates, associate and bachelor of science degrees, post-baccalaureate certificates, the master of imaging sciences, master of physician assistant studies and doctor of audiology.
