Cornea Specialist Tayyeba Ali, M.D., Joins UAMS
| Feb. 2, 2016 | Cornea and uveitis specialist Tayyeba K. Ali, M.D., has joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), and sees patients at the Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute.
Ali is also an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology in the College of Medicine. She comes to UAMS from the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, ranked the No. 1 eye hospital in the country for 12 consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report. There, she completed two surgical fellowships in cornea/external disease and uveitis.
“Dr. Ali is a superb ophthalmologist,” said Christopher T. Westfall, M.D., chairman of the UAMS Department of Ophthalmology and institute director. “She is a wonderful addition to our team.”
Ali earned her medical degree from the Emory University School of Medicine. She completed her internship in internal medicine and residency in ophthalmology at UAMS. During her residency, Ali received the Raymond and Mary Morris Ophthalmology Research Award, given each year to the top three researchers as judged by faculty, residents and a visiting professor. While at Bascom Palmer, she received the Fellow of the Year Award, given to the instructor who was most influential in resident education.
“I’m excited to return to Arkansas and become a part of the best eye care team in the state,” said Ali. “The prospect of staying involved in academics and teaching, while conducting research and providing care makes me excited about the work being done and the future of Jones Eye.”
Ali has delivered dozens of lectures and published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Arkansas Ophthalmological Society, Cornea Society, Women in Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
Ali will be one of two ophthalmologists in Arkansas to provide services for the Boston Keratoprosthesis, an artificial cornea. Additionally, she has expertise in treating complicated anterior segment issues and various forms of lamellar corneal transplantation.
