UAMS Names Renee Joiner Director of Arkansas SAVES Stroke Telemedicine Program

Joiner will oversee the operations of AR SAVES, which uses a high-speed video communications system to help provide immediate, life-saving treatments to stroke patients 24 hours a day. The AR SAVES program is a partnership of the UAMS Center for Distance Health, the state Department of Human Services and 48 Arkansas hospitals.

She replaces Michael Manley, who left in December to become director of clinical service integration and development for UAMS Medical Center.

In 1997, Joiner graduated from the University of Central Arkansas with a bachelor’s degree in nursing where she also earned bachelor’s degrees in biology and sociology in 1983.

For the last six years, Joiner served as trauma section chief for the Arkansas Department of Health. She was with the Health Department for 28 years, working in public health preparedness, health system licensing, cancer registry, HIV prevention, HIV services, tobacco prevention, maternal and child health, and chronic diseases.

UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic health center, with colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Health Professions and Public Health; a graduate school; a hospital; a northwest Arkansas regional campus; a statewide network of regional centers; and seven institutes: the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, the Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute, the Myeloma Institute, the Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute, the Psychiatric Research Institute, the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging and the Translational Research Institute. It is the only adult Level 1 trauma center in the state. UAMS has 3,021 students, 789 medical residents and two dental residents. It is the state’s largest public employer with more than 10,000 employees, including about 1,000 physicians and other professionals who provide care to patients at UAMS, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, the VA Medical Center and UAMS regional centers throughout the state.
