Diversity Day Brings Undergrads to UAMS
| March 20, 2018 | One hundred students from 24 Arkansas colleges and universities now know a little bit about what it takes to be a student at UAMS.
The undergraduates spent the day on UAMS’ campus March 9 querying current UAMS students, speaking with representatives from various UAMS colleges, learning best practices for success at UAMS and touring the campus. There also were students from Wilmington University in Delaware and the University of Memphis.
The annual event, sponsored by the UAMS Center for Diversity Affairs and supported by all UAMS colleges and the Graduate School, allows underrepresented and disadvantaged students the opportunity to learn about various programs and career paths available at UAMS following their undergraduate education.
In addition to breakout sessions with college representatives and students and question-and-answer panels, the undergrads received information on various summer enrichment and internship programs. Sessions were held for college advisors, too, who learned about UAMS admission requirements.
It is the fourth year UAMS has hosted a Diversity Day event since its inaugural in 2015.
“This gives us another opportunity to reach out to students across the state who may not know about all the opportunities available to them at UAMS after graduation,” said Billy Thomas, M.D., M.P.H., vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion and director of the Center for Diversity Affairs. “We’re committed to increasing the number of minority and disadvantaged students at UAMS and this is another way we can accomplish that goal.”
