Ben Amick, Ph.D., Named Associate Dean for Research of the UAMS Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health
| Ben Amick, Ph.D., has been named the associate dean for research of the Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).
Amick will identify collaborative research opportunities across campus, mentor junior faculty, and help strengthen the college’s doctoral and postdoctoral programs.
“I am extremely pleased Dr. Amick is joining the college,” said Mark Williams, Ph.D., dean of the College of Public Health. “He brings years of research experience and will help the college build supportive and collaborative research relationships both within UAMS and institutions and companies outside UAMS.”
Amick comes to UAMS from the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work at Florida International University, where he served as professor and chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management since 2013. He was also the college’s director of public health from 2014 to 2016.
Prior to that, Amick was a professor of behavioral science and epidemiology at the Texas School of Public Health.
“I am excited for the opportunity to work with faculty in the college and across UAMS and our partners, such as the Arkansas Health Department, to build innovative research programs to improve the health of Arkansans,” said Amick.
Amick served as a senior scientist for the Institute for Work and Health in Toronto, Canada, from 2007-2018. Also, he has been a reviewer for the Council on Education for Public Health, which is the accrediting body of the College of Public Health.
Amick has authored over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters, books and monographs. He has served on the editorial board and as associate editor of the Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation, on numerous National Institutes of Health and Canadian study groups, and as a reviewer for national and international public health journals.
Amick received two undergraduate degrees from the University of Maryland in 1978. He received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1986. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in epidemiology at Yale School of Medicine in 1992.
