UAMS Earns Bronze Award among Military Friendly Schools

Military Friendly Bronze Award“As a veteran myself, I’m gratified to see UAMS honored for the special attention it pays to those who serve, their spouses and their families,” said Brian Gittens, Ed.D., vice chancellor for diversity, equity and inclusion at UAMS.

The designation is based on both publicly published data and survey responses submitted by the institution, both of which focus on the school’s ability to attract, retain and matriculate veteran students as well as help them with job placement. It also tracks student loan repayment and default.

“Our plan for inclusive excellence at UAMS very intentionally included veterans as a specific group whose voices we wanted to hear as we shape policy when it comes to recruitment and retention,” said Gittens. “A group of dedicated volunteers works year-round to engage with our veteran students and employees through dialogue, events and regular meetings.”

“We are excited about how this designation highlights our support for military students and their families,” says Charlotte Gass, veteran services coordinator and associate university registrar. “UAMS has made a concerted effort to improve service to veterans and families through increased outreach and comprehensive student services support. It is truly an honor, as an institution, to give back to those who have given so much to us.”

More than 1,000 schools were evaluated nationally, but only 625 made the Military Friendly Schools list. Schools are categorized based on student population as well as degrees offered. UAMS was the only Arkansas school evaluated specifically as a graduate institution. It scored within 30% of the 10th best score for any graduate institution nationally to earn the Bronze Award.
