UAMS Nursing Student Elected to Seek National Student Leaders

By Spencer Watson

Jennifer Bustos, who will become a senior this fall, will serve on the Nomination and Elections Committee, which seeks out candidates for national offices and presents them to the organization’s House of Delegates.

“It means so much to me to represent UAMS, the College of Nursing and the state of Arkansas on such a large platform,” said Bustos. “When I first brought up to my instructor the plan to run for a national position, she told me that she hadn’t heard of anyone from UAMS running before, so I knew I had to go for it, at least to say we are here and competing on a national level.”

As the committee’s southern representative, Bustos will talk to members who might be interested in leadership positions in the southern region of the U.S., seeking out people who would be a good fit and encouraging them to run for a position. She will also publish an article in the NSNA publication Imprint.

The NSNA consists of 60,000 nursing students all over the U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. One of their mission statements is to bring together and mentor students preparing for final licensure as registered nurses, and to convey the standards, ethics and skills students will need as responsible and accountable leaders and members of the profession.

“I have been involved with the NSNA since the beginning of my junior year,” said Bustos. “I thought it sounded interesting and, the more I knew about it, the more I wanted to be involved.”

Bustos will serve on the committee through April 2021.
