Please Be Aware of Political Activity Policy for UAMS Employees, Students

By Ben Boulden

Employees

UAMS respects the rights of all UAMS employees to express opinions on legislation, but we must not present our personal opinions in such a way that they appear to be an official UAMS position.

As UAMS employees, we cannot use our titles, emails, letterhead, logos, symbols, and university-related communications to participate in political activity. Furthermore, it is not permissible to engage in political activities during work hours or with UAMS-issued technology and devices at any time.

Also, please remember that UAMS employees should not wear UAMS badges, white coats or other medical attire that would identify them as being with UAMS when attending legislative committee meetings or sessions and should not represent their opinions as being from UAMS. Contact with elected officials should be coordinated with Maurice Rigsby, vice chancellor for Institutional Relations.

Students

With the Arkansas General Assembly in session, please remember not to use UAMS titles, emails, letterhead, logos, symbols and university-related communications to participate in political activity.

UAMS respects the right of all UAMS students to make their opinions on legislation known, but ask that you refrain from presenting personal opinions in such a manner that they appear to be an official UAMS position.

Students also should not wear UAMS badges, white coats or other medical attire that would identify them as being with UAMS when attending legislative committee meetings or sessions and should not represent their opinions as being from UAMS. Please coordinate any contact with elected officials with the Office of Institutional Relations.

We also need to be mindful that COVID-19 screenings and other measures including limiting attendance at meetings are in effect at the Capitol in accordance with Governor Hutchinson’s directive to prevent the spread of the virus.

If you have any questions or comments related to these directives, please feel free to contact Maurice Rigsby, vice chancellor for Institutional Relations, at mrigsby@uams.edu or (501) 686-6305.
