Summer/Fall 2021 Issue of Medicine and Meaning Now Available
The Editors: Our current issue has something for everybody. The images section carries vivid photographs, paintings, drawings and now—for the first time—a video where you can watch a butterfly emerging from a caterpillar in the artist’s (and poet’s) own backyard. Our nonfiction section features reflections on COVID-19 and two memoirs, one about late life reconciliation between father and son and another on an uncle’s inspiration to his nephew to study medicine. In the fiction section, we feature stories relating to siblings dealing with a dying father, a pregnant woman anticipating her baby, and domestic violence. The poetry section features work from our burgeoning poets here at UAMS and some from the Poetry Roundtable of Arkansas, UA-Little Rock, and elsewhere. The five 55-word stories capture nature, medical practice in the pandemic, coronavirus infection, waiting for a biopsy, and words unsaid after it’s too late.
Finally, be inspired by our conversation with our new Dean and Executive Vice-Chancellor Susan Smyth, M.D.
We hope you enjoy this issue that you will send us your best work for our next issue in the spring of 2022.
