Marty Perry, Ph.D., Receives Volunteer Award from American Chemical Society
| Marty Perry, Ph.D., associate professor and vice chair for professional education in the UAMS College of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, recently received the E. Ann Nalley Regional Award for Volunteer Service for his longtime involvement with the American Chemical Society (ACS).
“Dr. Perry is much deserving of this recognition,” said College of Pharmacy Dean Cindy Stowe, Pharm.D. “He is an excellent educator who demonstrates a core commitment to professional service and leadership. We are extremely thrilled to have Dr. Perry join the faculty last year, and I know he will make a substantial difference in the education of future pharmacists.”
The award was instituted in 2006 by E. Ann Nalley as part of her presidential initiative to recognize volunteerism within the organization. It recognizes outstanding volunteer efforts in each of the organization’s 10 regions.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award,” said Perry. “I am privileged to have known Dr. Nalley for many years, and her unmatched commitment serves as an exemplar for all. I am grateful to Dr. Joe Jeffers, my former dean and colleague at Ouachita Baptist University, for nominating me. His mentorship and friendship provided guidance that encouraged me to value professional service. It has always been my belief that I have gained far more by serving than I have ever been able to give.”
Perry, an ACS member for over 25 years, received the award for the ACS Southwest Region, which includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma. He was general co-chair for two annual regional meetings hosted in Little Rock in 2008 and 2018. He is active in the organization’s Central Arkansas Section and has served on the ACS Division of Chemical Education’s executive committee and as chair of the Regional Meetings Committee.
The College of Pharmacy welcomed Perry as a new faculty member in July. Prior to his appointment, he served as an adjunct professor with the college since 2000. Previously, he worked at Ouachita Baptist for nearly 20 years in multiple roles, including professor of chemistry and the Nell I. Mondy Chair of Chemistry. While at Ouachita, he was named Professor of the Year by the Central Arkansas Section of ACS, in addition to being recognized for outstanding service.
More recently, Perry spent three years at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy as an associate professor and also served as a visiting assistant professor at the United States Naval Academy as well as an assistant professor at Arkansas Tech University. Perry received his doctorate in physical chemistry from Oklahoma State University and his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and mathematics from Arkansas Tech University.
