College of Pharmacy Students Receive Scholarships at Awards Ceremony

By Benjamin Waldrum

“All students honored here today have worked exceptionally hard to meet the criteria established to earn these awards and scholarships,” said Brendan Frett, Ph.D., assistant professor and chair of the College of Pharmacy Awards Committee. “The applications and essays we received this year were phenomenal and demonstrated the hard work and dedication our students have to their profession as well as their community.”

Although students may have different career plans, they all share one significant goal — to graduate from pharmacy school, while achieving financial independence as quickly as possible. Thanks to donor contributions, these scholarships and awards will help students continue their education and provide more of a financial cushion during their time in school.

“I was nervous when I applied because it meant a lot to me,” said Alex Moore. “But I knew I was devoted to community pharmacy. “Evan Lewis

Alex Moore, a graduating senior in the Class of 2022, told the first- through third-year students what it meant to receive the USA Drug Employees Endowed Scholarship last year, calling it a huge stepping-stone in his path to become a pharmacist.

“I was nervous when I applied because it meant a lot to me,” Moore said. “But I knew I was devoted to community pharmacy. I knew it was a good fit for me. This scholarship is significant and carries with it a substantial financial award. I work hard every single day to still be worthy of it. It did not stop when I got the email saying I received it; it continues to this day.”

“Congratulations to everyone receiving awards,” Moore said. “To the donors, thank you for entrusting us with the future of pharmacy and investing in the future of the profession.”

“Almost every one of these scholarships and awards that are given out today have a story, and I think that story is really important,” said Dean Cindy Stowe, Pharm.D. “Many of these gifts were given by individuals just like you: pharmacists, alumni and friends of the college and benefactors of the care by pharmacists. These donors recognize the impact of giving a gift like this for future generations of pharmacist care providers. As you think about the awards you’re receiving today, I would ask you to consider in the future making a small gift to that particular fund, because it will help future students as it has helped you.”

In addition to student recognition, each year a faculty member receives the Rho Chi Honor Society Teacher of the Year Award, voted on by all pharmacy students in the first three years of the program. This year’s recipient, introduced by Erica Smith, Class of 2023, is Ashok Philip, Ph.D., associate dean of student services and professor of pharmaceutical sciences. Philip joined UAMS in June.
