UAMS-Sponsored Health & Wellness Expo Draws Hundreds
| The Annual Health & Wellness Expo, held Sept. 24 at the Statehouse Convention Center in downtown Little Rock, drew nearly 500 Arkansans for the half-day event.
The annual event, sponsored by UAMS Health and presented by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, offered free health screenings and 30-minute presentations from UAMS physicians.
UAMS staff and students performed about 100 blood pressure and heart rate screenings and another 100 blood glucose checks.
Geriatricians from the UAMS Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging provided free consultations at the “Ask the Doctor” booths.
The UAMS medical specialties and services represented at the Expo with booths included the Vascular Center, the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, the Heart Center, AR ConnectNow mental health treatment program, UAMS Adult Sickle Cell Clinical Program, TeleSANE sexual assault care program and the ARresearch Registry with the UAMS Translational Research Institute.
The MammoVan was on site to teach attendees about it, and an inflatable Mini Brain model display attracted those present to learn more about stroke and other brain injuries and disorders.
Speakers from UAMS included Purushottam B. Thapa, M.D., director of the UAMS Mindfulness Program who shared information about mindful self-compassion; Mohammed Moursi, M.D., UAMS’ chief of vascular surgery who spoke about carotid artery disease; Dinesh Edem, M.D., an endocrinologist and director of the UAMS Medical Weight Management program who discussed how to prevent and treat weight-related complications; and Jeanne Y. Wei, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging who shared tips for aging well.
