Proton Radiation Physicist Joins UAMS Department of Radiation Oncology
| Wen Chien Hsi, Ph.D., has joined the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) as an associate professor of physics specializing in proton beam radiation therapy.
Hsi will work in the Proton Center of Arkansas, a partnership of UAMS, Arkansas Children’s, Baptist Health and Proton International that will provide the most advanced form of radiation therapy to children and adults with cancer. The center is the first of its kind in the state of Arkansas and one of only 41 proton centers in the United States.
“Dr. Hsi has experience in proton treatment planning and quality assurance in many disease sites, including pediatric, intracranial and prostate cancers,” said Fen Xia, M.D., Ph.D., radiation oncologist and chair of the UAMS Department of Radiation Oncology. “We are glad that Dr. Hsi joined our team to help make proton therapy available in Arkansas.”
Prior to joining UAMS, Hsi was assistant professor at the University of Florida Health Proton Therapy Institute in Jacksonville, Florida. He has served as senior medical physicist for the Miami Cancer Institute in Miami, the Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center in Shanghai, China, the McLaren Proton Therapy Center in Flint, Michigan, and the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute in Bloomington, Indiana. He is certified in Therapeutic Medical Physics by the American Board of Radiology.
Hsi is a graduate of Soochow University in Taiwan. He came to the United States in 1988 as a doctoral student in the Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University.
