UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute Names Monique Spillman, M.D., Ph.D., as Gynecologic Oncology Chief

She is also co-director of cancer services and a professor in the UAMS College of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Prior to joining UAMS, Spillman practiced gynecologic oncology for nine years at Texas Oncology, P.A., part of the Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center in Dallas. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Brigham and Women’s and Massachusetts General Hospitals in Boston and a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Duke University Medical School in Durham, North Carolina. She later joined the gynecologic oncology faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine where she completed a postdoctoral fellowship in women’s health and established her own molecular biology lab to investigate estrogen’s role in ovarian cancer.

“Dr. Spillman is an outstanding gynecologic oncologist who will bring a strong research orientation to our growing program,” said Michael Birrer, M.D., Ph.D., UAMS vice chancellor and director of the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute.

Spillman earned her medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical and Graduate Schools respectively, and a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry with high honors from the University of Texas at Austin, Texas.

Spillman is past chair of the American Medical Association Council on Ethics and Judicial Affairs. She has published 56 peer reviewed papers and 20 ethics committee policy papers.

Her many accolades include the 2006 Fellows Research Prize from the Duke University Medical Center, the 2010 Women’s Health Research Day Award from the University of Colorado, 2016-17 Super Doctors in Gynecologic Oncology, Phi Beta Kappa and the Society of Gynecologic Oncology Humanitarian and Volunteerism Award.
