Amit Tiwari, Ph.D., Joins UAMS College of Pharmacy as Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies
| LITTLE ROCK — Amit Tiwari, Ph.D., an accomplished educator and cancer researcher, joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Pharmacy as the associate dean of research and graduate studies.
“We are excited to get to work with Dr. Tiwari, who is a dedicated educator and seasoned scientist,” said Dean Cindy Stowe, Pharm.D. “I look forward to seeing the impact and contributions that he will have in the College of Pharmacy and the broader UAMS community in his role as associate dean and his research into improving drug design, discovery and development in achieving positive outcomes for cancer therapy.”
“To have Dr. Tiwari join UAMS in the College of Pharmacy is especially exciting for the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, given his background and experience in cancer research and education,” said Cancer Institute director Michael Birrer, M.D., Ph.D.
The associate dean of research and graduate studies leads the college in pursuit of its research mission and in developing, executing and promoting graduate studies.
“My decision to join the highly ranked UAMS College of Pharmacy was influenced by its national recognition, dynamic environment and innovative academic culture that fosters exceptional research,” Tiwari said. “With a strong focus on innovation in education, training, research, clinical services and building a culture of entrepreneurship, I aim to further enhance the college’s national and international acclaim.”
Tiwari joins UAMS from the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Toledo, Ohio, where he was professor of pharmacology and experimental therapeutics, and head of the Cancer Systems and Therapeutics program. He held a joint appointment at the university’s College of Medicine and Life Sciences as a professor of cell and cancer biology, and served as director of international engagement.
Tiwari has received multiple awards over his career for his role as an educator, mentor and scientist. While at Toledo, he received the University Outstanding Advisor Award, the Outstanding Faculty Award, the President’s Award for Excellence in Creative and Scholarly Activity, and the University’s Outstanding Research and Scholarship Award.
Tiwari is editor-in-chief of the international, peer-reviewed, open-source Cancer Reports journal and is an editor or associate editor for six more journals: Frontiers in Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics, Frontiers Oncology, Oncology Reports, Cancers and Frontiers In vitro Toxicology. He is on editorial board of Drug Resistance Updates and Journal of Clinical Medicine, among several others. As a cancer researcher, Tiwari is a well-known expert in the areas of drug resistance, drug discovery and cell death mechanisms. He has authored more than 145 peer-reviewed journal articles, as well as 14 book chapters. He holds a U.S. patent in cancer therapeutics, with several pending applications.
Tiwari is board-certified as a diplomate by the American Board of Toxicology. He is a honorary distinguished professor at Bharati Vidyapeeth University in Pune, India.
Tiwari’s research is currently funded by the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health and United States Department of Defense, among others. Over his career, he has received more than $8.5 million in extramural funding.
Tiwari received his bachelor’s degree from RamEesh Institute of Vocational and Technical Education in Greater Noida, India, and his master’s and doctoral degrees in pharmaceutical sciences from St. John’s University in New York. He received postdoctoral training at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.
