Colorectal Surgeon Jamie Cannon, M.D., Joins UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute

By Marty Trieschmann

Cannon is a well-respected medical educator and surgeon widely known for performing more robotic-assisted colorectal surgeries than any other female surgeon in the U.S., and the second most among all academic surgeons. She performed her 1,000th robotic colorectal surgery in 2020 at the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB).

“Dr. Cannon is an exceptionally talented leader, educator and surgical pioneer,” said Jonathan Laryea, M.D., chief of the Division of Colorectal Surgery in the College of Medicine Department of Surgery. “Her experience and immense knowledge in advanced surgical procedures for colorectal cancer will benefit patients tremendously.”

Cannon is accepting new patients; please call (501) 296-1200 for an appointment.

Cannon began performing robotic colorectal surgery in 2011, working as an early adopter in developing and teaching minimally invasive procedures. Her early adoption gave her a competitive advantage, securing her place as a nationwide leader. Since then, she has traveled the nation sharing her knowledge of robotic colorectal surgery with other surgeons at educational conferences and inside operating rooms.

Before joining UAMS, Cannon was a tenured professor of surgery and director of colorectal cancer services at UAB. For six years, she served as program director of the UAB colorectal surgery residency. She received her medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine, followed by a residency in colorectal surgery at Georgia Colon and Rectal Surgical Associates in Atlanta, and a residency in general surgery at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Cannon is board-certified in both general surgery and colon and rectal surgery. She is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
