“This year is especially significant, as we celebrate recognizing over 180 students, which is a record for the College of Pharmacy,” said Brendan Frett, Ph.D., assistant professor and chair of the College of Pharmacy Awards Committee. “This remarkable milestone is a testament to the dedication of our students, the generosity of our donors, and our ever-growing impact within the pharmacy community.”

The annual ceremony, held at the UAMS Little Rock campus, recognizes pharmacy students for their hard work and allows some the chance to meet the donors supporting their education. Donor contributions through scholarships and awards help pharmacy students continue their education and provide financial assistance during their time in school. Students fulfill various criteria to be considered for scholarships, including submitting applications and letters of recommendation, writing essays and meeting in-person with the awards committee.

Sixteen of the 181 pharmacy students received multiple scholarships this year, Frett said. The record number of students receiving scholarships comes in part from awards made to Class of 2027 and 2028 students that they received before starting pharmacy school. The ceremony included scholarships decided on by the awards committee during the previous spring semester, as well as newly created scholarships. The college awarded 197 total scholarships this year.

“Today is a reminder of the incredible dedication and commitment each of you has shown, whether as students striving to become leaders in pharmacy, or as faculty, donors, family and friends who help make their dreams a reality,” said Dean Cindy Stowe, Pharm.D. “This ceremony is not just about individual success, but about the spirit of collaboration, generosity and excellence that defines our college.”

Stowe thanked donors in attendance and watching the event live via Zoom, calling their support “a cornerstone to our success,” and recognized faculty and mentors for their leadership.

Stowe announced three new scholarships this year: the Stephanie Goodart O’Neal Scholarship, the Patricia A. Murphy Grace Award and the Charles M. West Leadership Excellence Award.

Deanna Massey, Pharm.D., Class of 2024, spoke to those in attendance about how scholarships made a significant difference for her as a pharmacy student. Last year, she received the USA Drug Employees Endowed Scholarship.

Massey emphasized the power of responding positively or negatively to a situation, and how that decision can shape the future, not only for them as students but throughout their careers.

“With the great opportunities that you’re given throughout your career, if you react to them negatively, it could potentially be detrimental to your future,” Massey said. “What will be your response to receiving the awards that you all receive today?”

Massey said that thanks to opportunities from her scholarship, she developed an interest in things she didn’t expect, including retail pharmacy, pharmacy policy and pharmacy ownership. She challenged the students to find ways to invest in themselves each day, and to respond to the opportunities that their scholarships and education will bring.

In addition to student recognition, each year a faculty member receives the Rho Chi Honor Society Teacher of the Year Award, voted on by all pharmacy students in the first three years of the program. This year the honor went to Lauren Glaze, Pharm.D., clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice. She joined UAMS in 2015 and is the clinical pharmacy manager for the UAMS South Regional Campus in Magnolia.
