College of Pharmacy Adds Three New Faculty Members
| The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Pharmacy recently welcomed three new members to its faculty: Corey Hayes, Pharm.D., Ph.D., MPH; Mokarram Hossain, Ph.D.; and Lara Rains, Pharm.D.
Corey Hayes, Pharm.D., Ph.D., MPH
Hayes joined the College of Pharmacy faculty as an associate professor of pharmaceutical evaluation and policy. He received his Pharm.D. and MPH from UAMS in 2013, and his Ph.D. in 2018. He joined UAMS in 2018 as an assistant professor in the College of Medicine and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2023. He has held a secondary appointment in the College of Pharmacy since 2020. It will now be his primary appointment.
Hayes has extensive experience studying substance use and substance use disorders. He also holds the Arkansas Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Professorship.
Mokarram Hossain, Ph.D.
Hossain joined the College of Pharmacy as an assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences, specializing in immunology and immunotherapy drug development. He received his doctorate from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatchewan, Canada, where he studied immune cell trafficking. He completed his postdoctoral education at the Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, where he conducted research on the mechanistic basis of immune cell behavior and function in various inflammatory diseases. As a prestigious Banting Fellow, he published landmark research discoveries in several top peer-reviewed journals. He further honed his expertise in drug discovery and development as a senior scientist at AstraZeneca, leading immunotherapy drug discovery projects.
Hossain’s laboratory focuses on engineering therapeutic antibodies to target various solid cancers and inflammatory diseases. His research bridges fundamental immunology with drug development, advancing both scientific understanding and clinical applications in cancer and inflammatory diseases.
Lara Rains, Pharm.D.
Rains joined the College of Pharmacy as an assistant professor of pharmacy practice. She earned her Pharm.D. from UAMS in 2022 and served her postgraduate residency at the UAMS Outpatient Pharmacy before working there full-time as a pharmacy specialist.
Rains will focus on teaching first-year pharmacy students. Her courses cover patient communication and assessment skills.
