Cardiothoracic Surgeon Mark O. Hardin, M.D., Joins UAMS

By Linda Satter

Hardin received his medical degree from UAMS in 2007 and has returned after spending several years as a general surgeon in the U.S. Army and three years as a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon at the Arkansas Heart Hospital.

“We are so pleased to have Dr. Hardin join the Department of Surgery,” said Ronald Robertson, M.D., chair of the department. “He brings an exceptional skill set in cardiovascular surgery. We look forward to growth in cardiovascular surgery under the leadership of Dr. Hardin and Dr. Streitman.”

John Streitman, M.D., a cardiac surgeon with a special interest in complex cardiovascular cases, joined UAMS in late 2023 to lead the cardiovascular surgery program.

“We are delighted that Dr. Mark Hardin has joined our cardiothoracic surgery team,” said Paul Mounsey, M.D., director of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine. “He will bring with him expertise in complex cardiovascular surgery and, along with our existing cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. John Streitman, will allow us to expand greatly our cardiothoracic surgery service.”

Born and raised in Little Rock, Hardin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business economics at Wheaton College in Chicago.

He completed his general surgery residency at the San Antonio Military Medical Center and a research fellowship at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research at the San Antonio Medical Center.

For several years, Hardin was a general surgeon for the U.S. Army in both Washington and Kansas, with deployments to Afghanistan, Kuwait and Syria.

He then completed a second residency, this one in cardiothoracic surgery, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Tennessee, before returning to Arkansas.

Hardin is board-certified in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery. Among his numerous publications are articles about combat casualties and managing surgeries on severely burned patients.

Hardin will see patients at UAMS and at the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital. He is accepting new patients. To make an appointment, call 501-526-7903.
