College of Pharmacy Student Appointed to National Advisory Group

By Benjamin Waldrum

The ASHP Pharmacy Student Forum has four advisory groups that provide advice and guidance regarding the unique needs of its members and how the organization can use its resources and programs to help address those needs. These include advancing the practice of pharmacy, career and leadership development, residency preparation, and student society development. Students will be assigned to one of these subgroups after orientation in the fall.

“We are extremely proud of Maddie for being named to this prestigious group of student pharmacists,” said Ashok Philip, Ph.D., the college’s associate dean for student services. “This national recognition reflects her exceptional leadership, commitment to advancing the pharmacy profession and her dedication to service.”

Butera, a native of Melbourne, Arkansas, is a member and past president of the college’s Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists (SSHP) chapter, which last year was one of only 20 chapters nationwide to receive an Outstanding Professional Development Award.

“I’m incredibly proud of Madeline Butera for being selected by the ASHP’s Pharmacy Student Forum Executive Committee to serve on this advisory group,” said Lindsey Dayer, Pharm.D., associate professor of pharmacy practice. “As last year’s SSHP president and a consistently engaged member of SSHP-ASHP, she continues to lead by example and make a meaningful impact in our profession.”

Butera is scheduled to graduate with the College of Pharmacy Class of 2026. She has worked as a pharmacy technician in several central Arkansas locations since 2013 and is currently a part-time student employee for UAMS while she pursues her Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

“I am incredibly honored to be appointed to this advisory group,” Butera said. “This appointment will facilitate the exchange of ideas from pharmacy students across the nation to advance pharmacy practice, prepare students for residency and develop student societies. UAMS has always been a leader in pharmacy education and practice, and I am excited to use this opportunity to continue UAMS’ legacy of excellence and provide actionable advice and mentorship for students nationwide to grow their own legacies.”

ASHP represents pharmacists who serve as patient care providers in hospital and outpatient clinical care settings. The organization’s 60,000 members include pharmacists, student pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Society fellows also have contributed to the body of knowledge of pharmacy practice in clinical settings, been involved in educating practitioners and been active in society membership and leadership.
