UAMS to Host Eighth Annual Day of Giving on Oct. 7

By Andrew Vogler

Started in 2017, the event is UAMS’ largest single-day philanthropic effort, helping highlight patient care, education and research programs across the institution, while celebrating the resilience of the entire UAMS community. This year, UAMS’ goal is to receive at least $400,000 in donations.

“Day of Giving is a celebration that not only brings UAMS together, but it is a reminder of how important philanthropy is in driving the institution forward,” said C. Lowry Barnes, M.D., UAMS interim chancellor. “More importantly, it is an opportunity for people who have been touched by UAMS to acknowledge their gratitude by supporting a particular area that maybe helped them in a difficult time. Every dollar counts and will go to great use.”

The UAMS Day of Giving will run for 24 hours, beginning at 6 a.m., Oct. 7, and ending at 6 a.m., Oct. 8. Any gift, no matter the amount, will have a positive impact on patients, staff, faculty and students. This year’s Day of Giving celebration will highlight five featured units and programs at UAMS:

  • Cancer Lung Screening Mobile Vans
  • Center for Nursing Excellence
  • Nancy “Jo” Smith Special Services Fund for Excellence
  • Northwest Regional Campus
  • Stocked & Ready Food Pantry

At noon, the Day of Giving Rally will be hosted by Mark Hagemeier, vice chancellor of Institutional Compliance, in the Hospital Lobby Gallery. During the rally, guests will hear from those who have been impacted by UAMS, find out the winners of this year’s challenge dollars and track the progress of the fundraiser.

All funds raised will support the various programs, funds, colleges or institutes chosen by the donor. Gifts are tax deductible and can be made online at dayofgiving.UAMS.edu or by calling 501-686-8200 during normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Throughout the day, supporters of the initiative can share stories on social media about how UAMS has made a difference for them using the hashtag #UAMSDayofGiving. The institution will be active on social media, celebrating donations, sharing testimonials and encouraging others to support the causes that matter most to them.

UAMS providers oversee more than 1 million patient appointments each year at its main campus, network of regional campuses, the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System and Arkansas Children’s. UAMS graduates more than 1,000 doctors, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals each year, the majority of whom stay in Arkansas to practice.

State funding is only a small percentage of UAMS’ $1.5 billion annual budget. Patient care revenue makes up the lion’s share, or 75%. UAMS relies on philanthropic support from generous donors in Arkansas and beyond to provide much-needed funds for clinical excellence, groundbreaking research and innovative education for the next generation of health professionals.
