Cancer Institute Spotlight Shines on Myeloma Center Physician

The Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute hosted its annual research retreat on May 7, 2025, at the Robinson Center in downtown Little Rock, at which Schinke was presented with the Cancer Institute Director’s Spotlight Award.

“The idea of the Spotlight Award is to highlight someone who is going above and beyond an academic career,” said Michael Birrer, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Cancer Institute and UAMS vice chancellor.

“I’m truly honored to receive this award,” said Schinke, an associate professor of medicine and co-leader of the Cancer Therapeutics Research Program at the Cancer Institute. “It was a nice surprise, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with the wonderful patients who trust us at UAMS with their care.”

Schinke has been with UAMS since 2014. She received her medical degree from the University of Halle in Germany, completed her residency at the Jacobi Medical Center in New York, and her fellowship in hematology/oncology at Montefiore Medical Center in New York.

She gave a presentation at the retreat on novel therapeutics in multiple myeloma, including such mechanisms as bispecific antibodies and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy.

“Dr. Schinke is a wonderful example of someone who takes ideas from the lab and translates them into treatments that benefit our patients,” Birrer said.
