Retinal Specialist Ahmed Shakarchi, M.D., MPH, Joins UAMS Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute
| LITTLE ROCK — Ahmed Shakarchi, M.D., MPH, who specializes in retinal disorders, has joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Harvey & Bernice Jones Eye Institute as an assistant professor of ophthalmology.
Shakarchi is an ophthalmologist specializing in vitreoretinal surgery, complex cataract surgery, and uveitis, a form of eye inflammation. His clinical interests include retinal detachment repair, complex anterior segment surgery, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and diagnosis and treatment of retinal infections and inflammations.
“Dr. Ahmed Shakarchi will be joining our retina team at Jones Eye,” said Paul Phillips, M.D., the institute’s director. “We are already familiar with his excellent work as an ophthalmology resident and fellow under Dr. Sami Uwaydat and Dr. Ahmed Sallam. We are lucky that he is now joining our faculty.”
Shakarchi earned his medical degree from the University of Baghdad College of Medicine in Iraq, and a Master of Public Health in epidemiology and biostatistics from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, where he was a Fulbright Scholar. He served two postdoctoral research fellowships at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute. Later, he completed his ophthalmology residency and fellowship training at UAMS, where he was chief resident and a clinical instructor.
“Having completed my ophthalmology training in Arkansas, I am deeply grateful for this community and the state I’ve come to call home,” Shakarchi said. “I look forward to give back to Arkansans by offering care for complex retinal diseases, uveitis, vitreoretinal surgery, and high-complexity cataracts. I look forward to contributing to both patient care and clinical research at UAMS.”
Shakarchi’s academic work includes ophthalmic clinical research and public health research. He has received multiple awards for his research presentations nationally and internationally and has co-authored more than 60 publications. He is a reviewer for 10 ophthalmology journals and two American Academy of Ophthalmology books.
