UAMS Honors Donald E. McMillan for 26 Years of Research, Teaching
| LITTLE ROCK – The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) honored scientist Donald E. McMillan April 9 for building the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the UAMS College of Medicine into one of the leading research and educational programs in the nation in that field.
“Don McMillan is known internationally for his expertise on drug abuse treatment and prevention. Arkansas and UAMS have been privileged to be home to his research and leadership for the last 26 years,” UAMS Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D., said.
McMillan is the retiring chairman and a Wilbur D. Mills Chair of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Prevention in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. During his 26-year career at UAMS, he has obtained more than $11 million in external research funding, focusing his research on treatments for drug addiction and helping establish the UAMS Substance Abuse Treatment Clinic. He serves on the editorial boards of several prominent scientific journals and was a 2000 recipient of the Nyswander-Dole Award from the American Methadone Treatment Association.
Dean E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., of the College of Medicine saluted McMillan for his leadership in many areas of campus research, teaching, and administration.
McMillan also received praise at the event from Linda Dykstra, Ph.D., the William Rand Kenan, Jr., Professor of Psychology and Pharmacology and dean of the Graduate School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
McMillan was the inaugural holder of the Wilbur D. Mills Chair, which honors the late U.S. Rep. Wilbur D. Mills, who represented Arkansas in the U.S. Congress from 1939 to 1977. Friends of Rep. Mills, corporations, foundations, and other organizations donated funds in his honor to supplement an initial grant by the Arkansas Department of Human Services.
