UAMS Neurosurgeon Receives National Award
| LITTLE ROCK – Sam Al-Mefty, M.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery in the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), has received a prestigious national award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) for his research on brain tumors, known as meningiomas.
Al-Mefty was presented with the Mahaley Clinical Research Award by the AANS and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Section on Tumors on May 5 at the annual AANS meeting in Orlando, Fla.
Al-Mefty won the award for his research paper, “Radiation Induced Meningiomas: Clinical, Pathological, Cytokinetic and Cytogenetic Characteristics,” which will be featured in the June issue of the Journal of Neurosurgery. Al Mefty said he would use the $1,000 that accompanied his award to continue his research.
Funded by the National Brain Tumor Foundation, the award is given annually and is named in memory of neurosurgeon Steven Mahaley, a longtime neuro-oncologist at Duke University who died in 1992. The award is given to the neuro-oncology investigator who presents the best clinical research paper in the brain tumor field.
Al-Mefty is a world-renowned neurosurgeon who is recognized as a pioneer in skull base surgery. Before coming to UAMS, Al-Mefty served as professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Mississippi and Loyola University in Chicago. Past president and founding member of the North American Skull Base Society, Al-Mefty is a sought-after lecturer and visiting professor for universities and societies around the world.
