Fitness Center Adds Classes, New Equipment
| A lot of changes have occurred this summer in the UAMS Fitness Center.
First, employee rates dropped to $15 per month for all employees. Then, new equipment was installed. Now members can attend Zumba and Yoga classes in the mornings.
“This has been an exciting summer for us in the Fitness Center,” said manager Natalie Cannady. “A lot of improvements that have been in the works for a while are coming to fruition now.”
The biggest change has been the $15 monthly membership for all employees, regardless of salary. Before, employees who made more than $30,000 paid $30 a month, while those making less paid $15.
“The response to the rate change has been tremendous,” Cannady said. “More than 200 people have joined the Fitness Center since we implemented the new rates.”
The new equipment was installed in the Fitness Center on June 14, said Cannady.
The equipment includes:
- 2 New Octane XT-4700 commercial elliptical machines
- 1 New Concept 2 rower– Model D Rower w/PM-5 Console
- 1 New BH Fitness LK 500IC commercial spin bike
(you can use YouTube and take FREE spin classes online) - 1 New TRUE CS900R recumbent bike
- 1 New TRUE CS 900 upright bike
- 1 New Tuff Stuff decline bench in the weight room
- 1 New Hoist preacher curl in the weight room
The aerobics classes began July 9, said Cannady, and the response has been very positive.
Zumba is at 5 a.m., Monday through Thursday, in the Bruce Commons area, which is on the first floor of the Rahn Building. Yoga is in the same area, starting at 6 a.m., Monday through Thursday. Click here for more information about the classes.
“A number of our members have been asking for classes, and we have been searching for ways to accommodate their requests,” said Cannady. “Being able to use the Bruce Commons area has provided us with a great space to meet this need.”
The Fitness Center has also worked with Parking Operations to secure parking for gym members.
Now, UAMS employees may purchase a yearlong parking pass for $21 that allows them to park on the top deck of Parking 2 between 4:30 p.m. and 8 a.m., perfect for those workouts in the morning or after work.
The Fitness Center is located on the eighth floor of the Rahn Building. It is open 24-hours a day, seven days a week through key card access.
