Jewish Leader to Speak at UAMS on Aging Issues

LITTLE ROCK — Author and religious leader Rabbi Richard Address will present a lecture on “Sacred Aging” at 5:30 p.m. May 4 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). The free event will take place in the Jo Ellen Ford Auditorium of the UAMS Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging and is sponsored by the institute’s ReCenter program.


 


Address is director of the Department of Jewish Family Concerns for the Union for Reform Judaism. His lecture concerns utilizing Judaism’s resources and richness to help synagogues relate to the aging population and includes topics that are applicable to any faith.


 


Address has authored, edited and contributed to a variety of publications on the topic of caregiving for aging parents, end-of-life issues and spirituality. In addition to teaching at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York, Address also writes a monthly column for Jewishfamily.com.


ReCenter is a program of the Institute on Aging that offers lectures, events and educational activities for people of all ages. Topics include traditional health issues such as nutrition and exercise as well as nontraditional approaches to health care, including spirituality and mindfulness.


 


UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic health center, with five colleges, a graduate school, a medical center, five centers of excellence and a statewide network of regional centers. UAMS has about 2,320 students and 690 medical residents. It is one of the state’s largest public employers with almost 9,000 employees, including nearly 1,000 physicians who provide medical care to patients at UAMS, Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the VA Medical Center. UAMS and its affiliates have an economic impact in Arkansas of $4.4 billion a year.
