LITTLE ROCK – Martha J. Brewer, M.D., has joined the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) as medical director of the University Women’s Health Center and a general OB/GYN in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Brewer, who began March 1, is also associate professor in the Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology. She will see patients at the University Women’s Health Center at Freeway Medical Tower.

She comes to UAMS after spending the last 23 years in private practice, working primarily in New Orleans and Metairie, La.

A Greenwood, Miss., native, Brewer received her medical degree from the University of Mississippi in 1979, and served her residency there, as well. She is an American Board Certified OB/GYN with special interests in minimally invasive surgery, vaginal surgery, menopause, medical education and the structure of the health care system.

UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic health center, with five colleges, a graduate school, a medical center, five centers of excellence and a statewide network of regional centers. UAMS has about 2,320 students and 690 medical residents. It is the state’s largest public employer with more than 9,300 employees, including nearly 1,000 physicians who provide medical care to patients at UAMS, Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the VA Medical Center. UAMS and its affiliates have an economic impact in Arkansas of $4.4 billion a year.
